Civil War General George B. McClellan Signed Card

George Brinton McClellan (1826 – 1885).   American soldier, civil engineer, railroad executive, and politician. A West Point Graduate McClellan served with distinction during the Mexican American War(1846–1848).  He left working on the railroad to enter the Civil War. Early in the war, McClellan was appointed to the rank of Major General and played an important role in raising a well-trained and organized army,The Army of the Potomac.  He served a brief period (November 1861 to March 1862) as General in Chief of the U S ARMY.

He directed the Peninsular Campaign and won at Antietam but was removed by President Lincoln for failure to continue pressure on Lee’s army. In 1864, he was the unsuccessful Democratic candidate for President, losing to Lincoln 233 electoral votes to 21. McClellan resigned his commission. From 1878-1881, he was Governor of New Jersey.

McClellan has signed a 2.25 x 3.50″ card of sturdy stock: Very truly yours, adding the date, June 23, 1869 in black fountain pen.  As noted, the card & McClellan’s signature are in excellent condition!
